We all fear death.
Some people even tried to avoid mentioning the word death and dying. We used words and phrase, like the person has passed away; I lost my brother: he is gone with the lord: he has crossed the rainbow bridge, etc.
We live in a death denying society. In our pursue of excellence, fame and fortune, we think we are invincible and will live forever. The search for excellence lifted our greed for wealth and success and ignorance of death.
Everyone knows that they will die, but nobody is sure of when and how they will die. Even a terminally ill patient cannot be sure that he will die of the condition that he is diagnosed with.
When I first started public speaking on this topic, I tried to invite all my friends to come to the lecture. One reason is to share collectively to them what I have leant and the other is hopefully to fill up the hall just in case no one shows up. Fortunately the second reason never happened as most of the talk had full attendance.
What was interesting was the reply of my friends. Some said they are not ready to think about this topic. Some said that they may be depressed by the talk and don't dare to attend. The best reply was from a relative of a dying patient who mentioned that he thinks it is not appropriate to attend my lecture at this time when a family member is diagnosed terminally ill.
Since when death is just a topic of discussion? Some people find death a subject too taboo to even think about it although it's true we are nearing death every seconds of our life here on earth. By not discussing death, can we postpone or avoid it. When is the right time to learn a new skill to help yourself and you love ones who is suffering?
May be you can tell me more...
