My PhD on death and dying

During my class yesterday, my professor and teacher shared on Dr Carmen Zammit, one of her student who was awarded her PhD posthumously.

I specifically asked her why a dying person would wish to do a PhD. Deep inside, I know it is actually a personal question.

I see resemblance of her in my own PhD in this aspects.

I was diagnosed with heart problems when I was deciding on whether I should do my PhD. Afterall, it was absolutely not about more fame, status, salary or anything physical that matters and everyone was worried that I should be resting more rather than taking up more work.

I decided against all my friends well thought advices and went ahead.. and of course during the first year of my study, I needed a heart surgery and it affected quite a bit of my course work when I was on medical leave for three months after the surgery.

I frequently asked myself why I am doing this PhD, and have found peace in this… and yes, it is about hope, motivation to share with others, and learning something so that I can help others better. Besides, it gives me reason to work hard on some aspects to improve myself and my wisdom practice.

I took this phD journey with joy and is enjoying my journey of learning and balance of life.

For me, the importance in what you are doing is constantly asking yourself "is this for PUBLIC GOOD" and my professor just told me a resounding "YES !"

May you be well, happy, peaceful.
